Most aspiring actors fail before they even get started.Â
They doubt themselves, they doubt whether they can do it, and they've committed to a nine to five job, so they build a story to believe, that they've left it too late and there's no way of accomplishing this at their stage of life.Â
I've heard this from people of every age. I've had an eighteen year old come up to me and say, I think I've left this too late.Â
Eighteen.Â
It's never too late. What it comes down to is this, if you actually want it, and you're single minded about it, you'll get there.Â
So why don't most people get there? It's not talent.Â
It comes down to two things, and only two things. Your product is off, or your marketing is off. Sometimes both. I've been doing this for over twenty years, and I see the same two mistakes made over and over, by actors who could otherwise be working right now.Â
One of the hardest things for a casting director to find is real. Not good, not polished, not technically accomplished. Real. Most actors never work out what they're actually competing against. They think it's other actors' talent. It isn't. It's other actors' interference.Â
Reason One: Your Product Is Off
You are the product. Your acting ability is what you're selling into the industry, and if there's something wrong with how you've been trained to do the work, no amount of effort fixes it. You just get better at doing the wrong thing, more confidently, for longer.Â
I'm not going to lay out every fault here, that only makes sense once you're in the room, on your feet, in front of me. But it's specific, it's fixable, and it's very rarely what people assume it is. I'll show you exactly what I mean this Sunday.Â
Reason Two: Your Marketing Is Off
Even actors doing the work properly can go years without being seen, because nobody ever taught them how to market what they've got. An agent said something to me once that stuck. She said, I don't care about your technique, I don't care where you trained, what I care about is how much money can you make me.Â
Think of it like a high street. Agents are the shops, and you're the product on the shelf. Casting directors are the buyers, walking in looking for something specific on behalf of a director. It doesn't matter how good the product is behind the label if what's on the shelf isn't ready, or isn't packaged right.Â

- No contacts, and no system for building anyÂ
- No idea how to answer the question every agent is silently asking, what's in it for meÂ
Sort the product and get the marketing right, and the industry finds you a great deal faster than most actors think.Â
