Why Most Actors Try Too Hard
Actors try too hard more often than they realise, and this can actually weaken their performance rather than improve it. Many actors believe that putting in more effort, forcing emotion, or pushing harder will make their acting better, but the opposite is often true.
In this video, Brian Timoney explains why actors try too hard and how this tendency comes from a natural desire to be seen as good or capable. He uses an example from outside acting to show how people increase effort when they are being watched. Actors try too hard in the same way, believing that more effort will lead to better results, when in fact it creates tension and interference.
Actors try too hard because they want to be liked, approved of, or seen as talented. However, this effort gets in the way of truthful performance. When actors stop trying to impress and instead remove interference, their work becomes more natural, believable, and powerful.
